Pushing pause

Pushing pause seems to be something I think about a lot in our learning hub. When you learn and facilitate collaboratively you truly have to unpick the why, how and what of so many things you used to naturally do without much thought. At times the simplest things can seem almost frustrating as you unpick your reasoning for them and begin to realise how many decisions you make based on your assumptions.

Assumptions is another word I often refer to and wonder how much of my own teaching career has been based on these.

So how do we unpick what we thought? Embracing the why of our learning hub as a group was an empowering discussion that we had last week. We started out by sharing our big ideas and then slowly dug deeper working towards a shared understanding of what it is we want for our learners and why. Of course this was never going to be a simple or easy conversation but what we all had to honor was this was not just about us it was about learners and moving our assumptions away from being just that to what we actually know.

Key words came out of our discussions:

  • Engage

  • Learners

  • Personalization

  • Passion

  • Holistically

  • Inspire

  • Empower

  • Agents of change

  • Play

By breaking these down and reflecting on what they meant to us we had to pick out the words that we felt were the most important. This enabled us to come up with this collaborative statement:

We want our learners to feel:

Inspired and empowered agentic learners who pursue their passions so that they can make a positive impact as global citizens.

This is Grade One’s learning hub philosophy and pedagogical understanding of why? We are doing what we are doing!

The next step is going to be the how and this is a conversation I cannot wait for..
